Chapter Ten
“Building a bridge”
S o, Cinderella, if eating a whole tub of ice-cream, four packets of Jaffa cakes, three chocolate bars, binge drinking, smoking or any other form of self-abuse feels good to you at first and is then followed with feeling terrible, we need to talk!
Firstly though, I will confess that the Jaffa cakes and chocolate bars in one daily sitting was me! Okay, also the whole tub of ice-cream plus a few other sides not mentioned above was me, too. To be honest, basically anything food related is me.
So, let’s break it down. The fact you feel terrible afterwards means that you want something you don’t think you can have. The bad feeling means there is a gap between a desire of yours, and where you think you are currently. For example, I want to be slender. However, I have just eaten all those cream cakes and chocolate in one sitting and I do it every day. This means I can’t be slender, slim or healthy – I am just a fat heffalump...
Who of you have bought four packets of something for the whole week and then eaten it all that day?
How do you sort this out? Well, relax – you don’t have to do it all at once. Get that notebook out and write at the top of the page ‘how you feel’ and ‘where you are’. Then let’s start building a bridge in the direction you want to go. I feel like this, ‘...’ how do I want to feel? I want to feel powerful, vibrant, light and happy. I want to feel proud of myself.
Now, this may magnify where you are, a bit, and make you feel momentarily worse. Nowadays, it always makes me feel good because I’m so ready, knowing that I can change my perspective and that I have the power such that as soon as I pick up the pen I’m already beginning to feel better.
It has now, though, given you an idea of your destination. For as soon as you know where you are, you also immediately have a clearer idea of where you do want to be. If where you are is feeling sad and down, your destination is feeling happy and up. If you’re feeling fat and it’s not pleasant, your destination is to feel slender. If you feel poor, your destination is to feel rich. To achieve this may seem impossible but that’s where I am going in my thoughts and feelings.
You’re not looking for action, here! It’s all about the thoughts and feelings.
I am where I am in the here and now, and that’s okay. Where I am is merely a culmination of what I have been focusing on and thinking and feeling in the past. It has nothing to do with what I am thinking now and where I am going.
So, now look for a softer thought that’s going in the right direction.
